Movie Review: Aggar

I watched this movie only for the fact that Shreyas was in it. And it turned out to almost be a pleasant surprise. Almost.

Let’s start with an outline. We start the movie with Tusshar (character names fail me) going to jail for murder. Then we find out he’s kinda pagal, so he’s sent to the mental institution, where he’s treated by doctor Adi Merchant (played by Shreyas. I guess I do remember names). So things happen, Adi ‘heals’ Aryan (that’s his name.), and he gets released.

Meanwhile, Adi’s wife, Udita (I really can’t remember her name this time) thinks Adi is cheating on her. Pausing for a moment, I don’t understand this. She sees her husband with another woman, and when he’s caught with said other woman, she doesn’t allow him to get a word in. She screams, yells (understandable, yes), but he asks her to just listen to him for a second. But she doesn’t, she walks out. She could have saved a lot of time and heartache if she just listened for a second. But that’s another story.

So yes, Udita thinks he’s cheating. And along the way, Aryan gets a job at Udita’s company. Coincidence? No, the script writers wrote it that way. So, Aryan’s still kinda crazy, and ends up in bed with Udita, who still thinks her husband is cheating. Fast forward a few days, and oops. Adi isn’t cheating. Now Udita’s stuck with a psycho.

Remember up there, where I said this movie was an almost surprise? Things are good up til here. Adi finds out Udita cheated, and that his patient is now obsessed with his own wife. Husband and wife go away for a while to get away, Aryan follows, etc, etc. A nice thriller shaping up here. And then there’s the twist. It gets italicized because boy, it’s one hell of a twist. Maybe I’m a bit slow, but I sure didn’t see it coming. So I’m thinking, “Damn, this is one amazing movie. I have to recommend it to EVERYONE.

But then, it hits me right in the face. This is Bollywood. They always figure out a way to mess it up. And yes, they mess it up. Big time. I won’t reveal anything, because honestly, it must be seen to be believed. The movie could have been great. Wonderful. Amazing. But it’s relegated to ‘average’ because of the beyond stupid ending. You’ll see what I mean.

You’d think, if the rest of the movie is so good, how can 10 minutes at the end ruin it? Well, it does. Really.

Performances wise, Shreyas was the best, of course. I have such a crush on him. And I can’t tell you exactly why. Tusshar was fine, I don’t think much of him anyway, and Udita, she’s not all that pretty IMO. So she was just…there.

Rating: ★★★☆☆
