Music Review: Om Shanti Om

What an album. It’s definitely worth the wait. Vishal Shekhar have had a rocking year, and this album pushes them to the front of my favorites list.

I’ll go in the order that I like the songs. Which will probably change over time.

1. Dard-E-Disco - Total guilty pleasure here. The lyrics are definitely not poetic (London, Paris, New York, LA, San Francisco), but what to do? How many words rhyme with Disco? I always have a big smile on my face while listening to this song. It’s so much fun, and I can’t wait to see the full song on the big screen. Sukhwinder sounds great, and though I could have done without the english, it doesn’t ruin the song at all.

2. Ajab Si - I’ve loved this one since I saw the promo. It’s sung beautifully by KK, and just so easy on the ears. We seem to have forgotten that Vishal and Shekhar can make this kind of beautiful music, not just the western, upbeat type like Cash. Remember Jhankaar Beats? They can do soft and slow, and they showcase that talent here and in the next song.

3. Main Agar Kahoon - Everyone I’ve talked to says this one is their favorite. I love it as well. Sonu’s just amazing, and takes over the song. The music sounds very fairytale-ish. Like a music box. Shreya compliments Sonu very well, and again, V-S show just how versatile they are.

4. Deewangi Deewangi - The 30 guest appearance song. And it sounds like it’ll be a blast on screen. Shaan and Udit coming together, and though the girls don’t get much singing time, they sound great as well. I love the upbeat pace, though the english gets to me more here. I find it completely unnecessary. Other than that, it’s a very good song, with a nice, dramatic ending. Makes me anxious to see what happens during the end.

5. Dhoom Taana - I love the old time feel to this song. Pyarelal’s done a great job, bringing back the old era. I love the transitions in the song, and it’s good so hear Abhijeet again.

6. Jag Soona Soona Lage - Another side of Vishal and Shekhar. Such a completely different song than the rest of the songs on the album, and beautifully sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Richa Sharma. I usually don’t like these kinds of songs, but this one is just wonderful.

7. Dastaan-E-Om Shanti Om - Such a powerful, dramatic song. Shaan puts so much energy into singing this, and he’s brilliant. After reading the translation, you see the story unfolding, and it’s very sad. I can’t wait to see the picturization.

I love remixes, so the rest of the songs sit well with me also. I love the medley mix, hearing all the songs together.

Overall, this is a wonderful album by Vishal Shekhar. I was disappointed when VS replaced Rehman, because I would have loved to see what he would come up with, but I’m very happy with Vishal and Shekhar. They’ve come up with a perfect album for what is hopefully a great movie.

Rating: ★★★★½
